Chapter 19

Two days after emerging through the gate into the Kragtron System, Koshal was on approach to The Gas Station. His scanners indicated no unusual traffic in the area. The only thing that piqued his interest were three light battlecruisers docked to the station. Further investigation showed they were registered to a mercenary company working on the newly colonized planet in the system. Also docked to the station were some small personal vessels and cargo ships. With no sign of danger, he aligned his ship with the berth Garickle had procured for him and docked.

Koshal exited his ship and proceeded down the corridor. Following only a step behind him were two imperial guards dressed in light armor and carrying laser rifles. They also carried secondary melee weapons of their own preference. Koshal was unarmed and only carried an oversized slate. He hadn’t carried a weapon—or even fired one—in centuries. With the Imperial Guard, there was little threat within the walls of the Sheingal palace. This sense of security had caused him, and many others, to become lax with their personal protection.

He turned his head to the side as they walked down the empty corridor and spoke over his shoulder. “Durgral, Pasqual, keep your wits about you. Watch for anything suspicious,” he cautioned. “I don’t expect any issues with the Caldivar, but it wouldn’t be the first time a being made a stupid decision.”

“Understood, Counselor,” Durgral answered in a gravelly voice. He was an eight-foot-tall, broad, brown-colored being. In addition to his laser rifle, he carried a large, double-bladed battle axe on his back, though he had never used it in a real battle. He turned his head to his companion. “I hope the Caldivar is stupid.”

Pasqual grinned but kept his eyes forward. “Agreed,” he hissed in a raspy, high-pitched voice. “It would be a shame to come all this way and not get to play with our new friends.”

Pasqual was much leaner than Durgral and several inches taller. His coloring resembled that of rust. His secondary weapons were his favorite weapons. On each hip, he carried what looked like steel handles with nothing attached to them. That illusion quickly disappeared once he pressed the small button at the top and thin, steel cables ejected from the handles. For all intents and purposes, they were steel whips, capable of removing flesh down to the bone. If that wasn’t enough, the handles contained power cells that surged energy through the cables and caused them to glow electric green. The energy was strong enough to burn limbs completely off, or an enemy’s head if the strike was landed properly.

Koshal had chosen the two guards not only for their abilities, but because they had been on his payroll for quite some time. It was beneficial to have eyes and ears around the palace. Too many eyes and ears, however, could become a problem. So, he kept his circle small. It currently consisted of him, Gortal, and the two guards with him now.
